Associate Dean for Nursing in the College of Health Sciences & Pharmacy
Position Summary
The Associate Dean for Nursing in the College of Health Sciences & Pharmacy at Chicago State University has the authority and responsibility for the success of the School of Nursing, providing visionary and strategic leadership. The Associate Dean ensures the delivery of high-quality nursing education through program administration, ensuring accreditation and regulatory compliance, faculty development, student support, and contributions to teaching, research, and service. This is a full-time, 12-month administrative position reporting to the Dean of the College of Health Sciences & Pharmacy.
Primary Responsibilities
- Leadership and Administration
• Develops and implements short- and long-term goals for the School
• Aligns nursing program initiatives with the strategic priorities of the College and University
• Oversees the preparation of academic schedules, faculty workload, and the effective delivery of instructional services
• Collaborates with faculty on developing, modifying, and implementing practical and innovative curriculum and teaching/learning methodologies
• Prepares and manages the School’s budget and fiscal resources in collaboration with College and University officials, incorporating input from the faculty
• Engages with the College and University in seeking, securing, managing, and evaluating external funding opportunities from grants, partnerships, and philanthropy - Accreditation and Compliance
• Supports the faculty with program assessment
• Ensures all programs meet or exceed standards established by accrediting and licensing organizations (e.g., ACEN, etc.)
• Maintains effective communication with accrediting agencies and prepares required reports and documentation
• Identifies best practices and innovations to ensure programs align with evidence- based teaching and learning interventions aimed at enhancing program outcomes - Faculty and Staff Engagement and Development
- Promotes faculty engagement in governance at the School, College, and University
- Recruits, mentors, retains, and evaluates faculty and staff
- Provides guidance on tenure, promotion, and opportunities for professional growth
- Fosters a culture of innovation and excellence in teaching, research, and service
- Student Success and Advocacy
- Develops and implements strategies for student recruitment, admission, and retention
- Involves students in appropriate School governance activities
- Supports student success by overseeing advising, mentoring, and career development initiatives
- Ensures the provision of NCLEX preparation, support, and guidance for both new and former graduates
- Oversees student grievances and appeals in partnership with faculty and relevant university offices
- Collaboration and Representation
- Identifies and fosters College, University, and community collaborations to enhance the education and reputation of the School
- Assures that communities of interest have opportunities to provide input to the School
- Acts as a liaison between the nursing school, college leadership, and external stakeholders, including healthcare organizations and alumni
- Represents the nursing program at university meetings, professional meetings and organizations, and community events
- Teaching, Research, and Service
- Role models excellence in clinical and classroom teaching through guest lecturing or other activities
- Participates in research and other scholarly activities independently or with faculty and other professionals
- Promotes evidence-based practice among faculty and students
- Utilizes research findings and best practices to guide changes in the organization, delivery, and financing of the nursing program.
- Engages in College, University, professional, and community service as appropriate for tenure and promotion and professional obligations
- Additional Duties
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean and/or the Provost & Senior Vice-President of Academic and Student Affairs
Minimum Requirements
- Earned doctorate with a masters or doctoral degree in nursing
- Current Illinois nursing license or eligibility for licensure
- Minimum of five years of professional nursing practice experience
- Minimum of five years serving as a nurse educator in an academic setting
- Minimum of five years of leadership experience in an academic nursing setting
- Experience with accreditation and state regulatory processes in Nursing
- Tenured and/or the ability to achieve tenure
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in nursing education administration
- Demonstrated service to academe, profession, and community
- Proven history of scholarship, including publications and other scholarly work
- Record of successful grant applications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of the nursing profession and the connection between research, education, and practice
- Understanding of accreditation and regulation of nursing education and practice
- Ability to lead diverse teams and foster a collaborative working environment
