Position Overview

Hampton University, home to the nation’s only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) varsity co-ed sailing program, seeks an experienced, dynamic, and inclusive leader to serve as Head Coach of its highly competitive sailing team. The Head Coach will be responsible for all aspects of the program, including coaching, recruitment, administration, and community engagement, with the goal of maintaining and elevating the team’s tradition of excellence within the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) and the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA).

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Coaching

  • Organize, plan, and lead daily practices and regattas for student-athletes of varying skill levels, focusing on safety, skill development, and competitive success.
  • Instruct and mentor student-athletes in sailing techniques, race strategy, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
  • Foster an inclusive and supportive team culture that values diversity, academic achievement, and personal growth.
  • Ensure the safety of all participants during practices, travel, and competitions.

Team Administration

  • Oversee all administrative aspects of the program, including scheduling, travel logistics, regatta registration, and budget management.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, equipment use, injuries, and performance.
  • Supervise and mentor assistant coaches, student workers, and volunteers as needed.

Recruitment & Retention

  • Recruit and retain talented student-athletes, with a focus on building a diverse and competitive roster.
  • Promote the program to prospective students, parents, alumni, and the broader sailing community.

Fleet & Facility Management

  • Oversee the maintenance, repair, and inventory of the team’s fleet and equipment, ensuring all boats are safe and race-ready.
  • Coordinate with university staff to manage the use of waterfront facilities.

Community Engagement & Outreach

  • Represent Hampton University at local, regional, and national events, serving as a positive ambassador for the program and the university.
  • Support efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in sailing, including outreach to local schools and community organizations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Significant experience in competitive sailing and coaching at the collegiate or high school level, with a strong record of success in dinghy and/or keelboat racing.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, motivate, and mentor college student-athletes from diverse backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with ICSA rules and collegiate sailing formats.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Competency in boat maintenance and powerboat operation.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel with the team for regattas and recruitment.
  • US Sailing Level 1 Instructor certification required; Level 2 or 3 preferred.
