The Deputy Director of Athletics / Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Hampton University is a
unique role that offers the opportunity to lead the day-to-day operations of the Hampton
University Department of Athletics (HUDA). Reporting directly to the Director of Athletics, the
COO is the second in command of the HUDA, responsible for its supervision, coordination,
execution, and evaluation.
As the COO, the Deputy Director of Athletics at Hampton University plays a crucial leadership
role. This includes providing management, supervision, and leadership to the HUDA staff on a
daily basis, and overseeing the internal, facility, equipment, financial, and recreational operations for the HUDA.
As COO, serves as a member of the Director of Athletics; senior staff as second in command of the HUDA; attends regular meetings with HU’s Sr Women’s Admin, FAR, Compliance, and Director of Athletics; assists the Director of Athletics in developing an efficient organizational structure; works with HU executive leadership to ensure that HUDA is operating consistently with the goals and purposes of the university, including working closely with the President’s office to assure adherence to CAA and NCAA rules, policies and procedures and the Provost’s office to monitor HUDA student-athletes academic progress and cooperate in efforts to help them be successful academically; and acts as an official representative of HUDA at HU, Coastal
Athletic Association and national organizations as requested by the Director of Athletics.
Oversees financial and facility areas, including: (1) development of the annual budget; (2)
financial performance of HUDA; (3) salary adjustments of HUDA employees; (4) creation,
modification, and execution of a master facility plan; (5) coordination with outside firms and HU Long Range Facilities Planning staff on facilities projects; and (6) bids/budgets and approval process for facilities projects.
Oversees internal functions of HUDA, including: (1) responsibility for regular communication
with the coaching staff, acting as a liaison between the coaching staff and department heads in the areas related to scheduling, procurement, and problem-solving; (2) evaluating programs at the end of every season; (3) team travel arrangements for intercollegiate teams in collaboration with appropriate departmental managers; (4) event/game management; (5) supervision of the equipment room operations; and (6) leadership of the intramural and recreation area.
Coordinates with Deputy Director for External Affairs/CRO and Executive Senior Associate AD,
Advancement on external functions of HUDA, including: (1) revenue generation from all
sources-fundraising, ticket/premium sales, multimedia contracts, merchandise sales, etc.; (2)
strategic relationships for multimedia rights, apparel partnerships, merchandising, and other
critical external relationships.

Serves as contact for coaches and student-athletes regarding current and future needs of all varsity programs; directs oversight of specific sports as assigned by AD, including coach evaluations, schedule development, game contracts, etc.; assists in handling disciplinary problems with student-athletes as requested; handles special projects as initiated by the Director of Athletics; regularly attends athletic events; and performs other related duties as required or assigned.

A bachelor’s degree; five (5) or more years’ previous experience in a leadership role within a
collegiate athletics department or equivalent experience; demonstrated knowledge and ability in the areas of revenue generation, staff management, facilities management, capital projects, and budgeting; experience in strategic planning and execution; knowledge of contracting, negotiating and change management; ability to facilitate and participate in group meetings; professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills; previous experience in overseeing sport programs; must be willing to work weekends and evenings; must be able to work cooperatively with the HUDA’s administrative, coaching and support staff as well as various entities and constituents on and off-campus; substantial managerial experience collegiate athletic department strongly preferred; a master’s degree preferred.
